25 Movie Reviews from Toronto…in 25 Sentences

High School Reunion
There is no doubt that John Hughes was the master of films about high school. With some of the most iconic flicks from the 80’s (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink, etc.) he stands head and shoulders above the rest. That does not mean though that the art of high school cinema ended with him when he passed away this past August. In fact, Christopher Borrelli of the Chicago Tribune has compiled his list of the 10 Best High School Movies Since 1987.
Dog Days of Summer
As the summer slowly comes to an end, the last of the dog days of summer also arrives. This dog day was a bit different though as it held the 4th annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, a surfing competition for pet owner’s and their dogs, all done in the name of charity. Are You Happy?
A deceivingly simple question for most Lemon Lifers. There are so many things that can contribute, or detract, from your overall happiness when you’re living the Lemon Life that it’s sometimes hard to give a straightforward answer to this question. Well if you’re feeling a little blue on this Monday, then be sure to check out this article from HowStuffWorks.com:

Lemon Aid
According to all the sources, one of the key characteristics of Gen Y is a sense of philanthropy or wanting to do something for the greater good. The problem is it’s hard to know where to best focus your efforts. Good Magazine is here to help with a really cool interactive chart highlighting some of the problems that need the most help. Take a look:

Parenting 2.0
We all use Facebook and Twitter as a means to stay in touch with our friends and relatives. These sites have become a part of our lives (for most people) and are widely used with good intentions. Well here comes The Onion with a warning to kids to watch out for parental Facebook friendship. Check it out:

Walk Down Memory Lane
Every now and then it’s good to take a minute to remember the past. For many of us that means reflecting on our childhood in the 80’s and 90’s. Well here to help is the blog/site iceicebabies.com full of nostalgic 90’s goodies including this list of the Top Cartoon Show Intros. Here’s my personal favorite:
Rising Stars
After his breakthrough role in The Hangover, Zach Galifianakis has been popping up everywhere. Now with his new series, Bored to Death, coming to HBO it seems that his star is only just rising. Check out some of his hilarious interviews on Funny or Die:
Wacky Races on Acid
One of my favorite shows as a kid was Wacky Races and now it seems that someone else in Japan was also a fan. They have created this, how should I say, “interesting” interpretation of a wacky race. See for yourself:
The Urbanaut
Check out this funny little cartoon from torontoist.com illustrating the concept of the lemon life in video game format. Stay tuned, you never know when this game might become reality…
Are You Smarter Than A Parrot?
Since leaving university have you been able to keep your mental acuity sharp? Do you think you could beat this parrot in a test of wits? Check it out:
The Importance of Planning
If there’s one message that has stuck with me since leaving university it is the importance of planning ahead. Whether you plan ahead to balance your work load, or even just to make sure you can handle something on your own, planning is integral to the success of any scheme. Unfortunately this poor fellow never learned this lesson. Check it out:
King of the Wild Things
I can’t tell if this guy is crazy or awesome or both. He lives and plays with 38 lions in his home preserve in South Africa. Some of this footage is unreal. Check it out:

It’s hard to miss the hoopla surrounding President Obama’s health care reform complete with town hall meetings across the country where all the crazies come to play. In this delightful excerpt Barney Frank salutes the first amendment with his biting response to accusations of Obama’s ‘Nazi-like policy’.

Direct to DVD:
It’s a shame to see so many good films suffer the indignity of a direct to DVD sequel. Unfortunately it does happen, and when it does, there is undoubtedly a blog or website around to scoop it up and package it into a list. In this instance, Moviefone.com has compiled the 15 Ludicrous Straight-to-DVD Sequels that Actually Exist.

Flash Mobbing:
There are many different ways you can conduct a flash mob. The most popular seem to be those that incorporate seemingly random coordinated dance routines. There are others however that are much more simple, for example this one which just involves showing up with a pillow at the right place and time. Check it out:
The Building Blocks of Cinema:
With the success of G.I. Joe, Transformers, and other toy to movie adaptations, it seems like it was only a matter of time before things got out of hand. It seems that a deal has been signed to create a movie based on Lego. How exactly that will work? No one seems to have any idea. Read the full story here:

Friday Night Fun:
As it is the almost the weekend I thought I should remind you of some of the fun that is to be had. This is not to say that you have to go out and get wasted but it certainly makes for good stories. Take a look:

Timewasters:
A while back we presented an article about how to keep your mind in good shape even when you’re out of school and not actively learning any more. Well beyond crossword puzzles and sudoku, here is a site that offers up quizzes that test your knowledge and your speed. Be careful, it can get a little addictive.
It Sucks To Be Me:
This is one of my favorite songs that has ever been put on stage. Not only is it a great song dealing with some very Lemon Lifey material but it also involves puppets. How much better could it get?
Infotainment:
We’ve all seen those late-night infomercials for Slap-Chop, Sham-Wow, Oxy-Clean, or whatever other lame product people are trying to peddle on TV. Well, looking back at some of the infomercials from the 90’s it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come. Check out some of the worst infomercials from the 90’s at Ice Ice Babies or you can just watch my favorite one right here:
Time Wasters:
For those of you stuck at a boring job all day looking for something to fill the hours, or if you’re just sitting at home unemployed in search of a way to achieve that same goal, here’s a great distraction. Give a Day Get a Night:
Let’s face it, charity is great, but it’s even more appealing when there’s something in it for us. Tapping into this understanding, as well as our generations inclination to ‘do good’ and with hotel occupancy rates tumbling around the world, hotel group Sage Hospitality has come up with a novel idea to promote their hotels and volunteerism: it’s offering half priced rooms for everyone who has completed a day of charity work. The promotion is good from July through December 2009. All you have to do is show a letter from a registered non-profit at check in and they will automatically take 50% off the published price of the room. So go out and do some good, and then relax in a half priced hotel room.

Shaqzilla:
As if Mana Mana wasn’t enough for one day, there’s one more Juicy Bit that just can’t wait to be posted. A couple days ago, Shaquille O’Neill was the guest host for WWE Raw. Why? Who knows…and who really cares. All that matters is that you get to see Shaq fight the Big Show. Take a look:
Mana Mana:
There are two versions of this that I would like to share with you today. The first is the original skit presented on the Muppet Show back in the 70’s. It’s a classic bit and the song will get stuck in your head for days.
The second version is from Ricky Gervais’s original version of The Office, equally, if not more funny; equally as catchy:
Recessionomics:
It seems that this recession is truly affecting everyone and businesses thought to be recession proof are even feeling the pinch. Case in point this latest news story from the Daily Telegraph discussing the new promotions German brothels are offering in order to boost their business. I won’t spoil it for you, needless to say, this is a hysterical article.
Recession-hit brothels offer novel promotions

Bernie’s Blunder:
You know how sometimes you just start something not really knowing how far it will go? Our feature for today even talks about the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and how sometimes you just have to follow something through to its end. Well it turns out the the man everyone loves to hate, Bernie Madoff, never planned for his $65 Billion Ponzi scheme to last as long as it did. Read his first interview since entering prison:

Sitting e-Shiva:
A while back we posted a piece on the death of Michael Jackson and how Facebook affected the spread of that tragic news. Well now, in a similar vain, The New York Times has just posted an op-ed piece about how the much-used social network is changing the way we memorialize our lost friends.
A New Kind of Memorial for the Internet Age
Pick Me Ups:
Every now and then we will present you with a movie trailer that we here at The Lemon Life find to be worth getting excited about. Well this one is no different. Anyone who is a fan of the eerily styled work of Tim Burton should already know about his latest live action adaptation of Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland. Well lucky for us a teaser trailer has just been released and it looks like there’s plenty of reasons to get excited. Take a look:
You Better Believe It…NOT:
Social media guide Mashable.com has just released their list of the top 15 Internet hoaxes of all time. Check out the list to see if you have fallen victim to one of these elaborately planned out practical jokes. Sadly, I have been swept up by a couple of them.

Pocket Money:
Lately people have been talking about how big the US national debt is in terms of trillions of dollars. But how big is a trillion bucks anyways? It’s hard to comprehend such a large sum when you haven’t ever encountered it. Well here’s a brief animation to help you understand just how much $1,000,000,000,000 actually is:
A Day in the Lemon Life - Utah:
Over the past three days we have been bringing you a series of articles outlining possible ways to live in expensive cities for at or around $20 (or pounds) a day. Well here’s a story about a man living in Utah who, for the better part of the last decade has managed to live on $0 a day. Want to know the secret of his success? Check out the article:

Night at the Museum:
Museums are a wonderful way to get a bit of culture into your life. They’re usually pretty cheap and provide some entertainment on an otherwise dreary afternoon. However, sometimes museums can be a little dull. Well not any more! If you head down to one of the 20 Strangest Museums in the world, you can bet that your interest will be piqued.
Believe It or Not: the Strangest Museums the World Has Ever Seen

Stuff White People Like:
One of the very first posts to our Juicy Bits section was the (then) newly released trailer for Where the Wild Things Are, the new movie from Spike Jonze based on the classic children’s book. Well it turns out, according to the blog Stuff White People Like you can determine how white your friends are based on how quickly they spread the word on this trailer. Read the whole post to find out why:
#127: Where the Wild Things Are

To see the trailer, scroll down to the bottom of this page.
Auto Tune the News:
I have now seen a couple of these videos and none of them have really made me laugh until this one. Somehow a congressional debate on an energy bill and the death of Michael Jackson make for great auto tuning. Who knew that so many people in congress and the media could sing so well?
Job Hunting:
Most people would tell you that in this economy it’s unwise to quit your job and venture into the world without a real plan. Now former Alaska governor Sarah Palin seems to have ignored all of this advice and has somehow landed a cushy job writing op-ed pieces for the Washington Post. Since you have to be a member of the Post to read the full piece, I’ll have to refer you to the response piece from Gawker which provides a nice size snippit to make you realize how truly moronic this woman is:
Sarah Palin: Washington Post Op-Ed Writer

Musical Theatre:
I am no fan of musical theatre but I understand how some people can like it. I have even been known to tolerate it in certain situations, mostly when there is a strong comedic element to the music (The Producers, Avenue Q, etc.). So for all of you non-musical loving people out there I submit to you this video, based on the music of West Side Story but with a distinctly modern twist. Enjoy!
See more funny videos and funny pictures at CollegeHumor.
Stargazing:
If you have the luxury of living someplace where you have the ability to look up at night and see a sky full of stars you should consider yourself lucky. For us city folk, all but the very brightest stars get drowned out in a sea of light pollution. It’s a shame really, considering how much beauty is up there. If you would like a closer look at some of the infinite beauty in the universe, be sure to check out Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), a site sponsored by NASA that offers up stunning images and brief descriptions of what you’re looking at. Here is today’s image of “The Dark River to Antares”

Adopt-a-Grad:
While there are those of us living the Lemon Life and making ends meet, there are those who are so utterly lost that they need your help. Find out how you can aid these poor souls here:

This is a timeless feeling that everyone seems to share. Don’t believe me? Then check out these great old summer photos compiled by The Daily Beast:

Firkin University:
Student debt is one of the few things that is hard to put a positive spin on. There are no upsides to it and it seems to be continuously looming over you, making your financial footing unstable at best. Well for those of you who would like a chance to escape your debt Firkin Pubs are offering up a great opportunity:

Crazy Cat Lady:
Once again, there seems to be a theme to today’s posts: pets. Whether you’re a dog person or a cat lover, you should be entertained by this story. It seems a woman in South Africa has taken the term “Crazy Cat Lady” to a whole new extreme. She lives with 11 felines, none of which is a normal Tabby or Persian. No, she likes ‘em bigger. Riana Van Nieuwenhuizen has…well you’re going to have to read the article to find out by reading this article from The Daily Mail:
Graffiti 2.0:
It seems like the police are always trying to find ways to stop people from presenting their art in public spaces. Graffiti has become a fairy major focus for them but there are many other forms of distribution popping up all over the world. Papergirl is one such form. Started in Berlin, Papergirl is growing rapidly and has already started to show up in about a dozen US cities. Read all about it: Papergirl Street Art Project
Wallabies from Space?:
For decades people have wondered how crop circles form. Most believe that they are caused by aliens, landing their space ships in farmers’ fields. Well it seems now that stoned wallabies are the newest culprits behind these phenomena, at least in Australia. The truth is out there: High as Kite Wallabies Blamed for Crop Circles
Tough Times:
While it may seem hard slogging through un/underemployment day to day, that clearly is nothing compared to the hardships that the U.S. Congress is up against. They really live a terrible life, making social reforms, living the high life in DC. Boy it must suck to be a representative in congress. Don’t believe me, just ask John Boehner (R-Ohio):
Blue Collar is Better Than No Collar:
It seems like from elementary school on your educational path is plotted out for you: Kindergarten through 5th Grade at one school, graduate to middle school for 6th-8th, high school for 9th-12th, and then off to university to get a BA and enter the real world fully prepared. Well what if you could take out that last bit and still be fully prepared? According to USA Today and their interview with Joe Lamacchia, you don’t need a fancy college degree to be successful. Find out how: Should More Students be ‘Blue Collar and Proud of It’
Lemon Lifers Abroad:
We seem to be lucky enough to reach a broad enough audience that we are able to connect with lots of people around the world. Through these connections we are then able to offer you some great stories of people traveling abroad. One of these people is Grace Boyle, who is currently in Bangalore, India. Check out her blog as she writes up her Lemon Life Abroad: Rainspotting in Bangalore
Battle of the Bargains:
Our old friend the Frugal Traveller has struck again with a great column about which of the online booking sites will find you the best deals on your travel plans. Read the full column: Travel Web Sites: A Click-On Showdown
Textaholic:
Do you think you have what it takes to be crowned the Fastest Texter? If you do you may want to check out this year’s champ. She’s only 15, from Iowa, and has had a cell phone for less than a year. Still think you got what it takes?
It Could Be Worse:
While many of us seem to be in the midst of a quarter life crisis (or whatever terminology is current) there are those who have it much worse. For instance, you could be caught on video doing something really embarrassing and end up on Fail Blog, resulting in your embarrassment being broadcast to the world. Case in point, you could be this person:
Blast From the Past:
If you ever find yourself feeling nostalgic for a simpler time, when all you had to worry about was which cartoons to watch on Saturday mornings, which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle you would like to be, which Power Ranger was the best, then you should take a trip over to RetroJunk.com. This site offers up videos and images from all of your favorite childhood shows and movies. My personal favorite is Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?
Pucker Up:

Study Skills:
Throughout my entire university career I was continuously told that time management was pivotal to my success on exams, projects, assignments, etc. Clearly this is not the case, as proven by Chao Mu-he. Find out why here: Taiwan’s 96-year-old grad student says cramming works

This site should provide you with enough entertainment to get through your afternoon and make it to the glory that is the weekend. Enjoy!

For the Birds:
Apparently there’s a new threat that everyone needs to be aware of. Dangerous attack birds. Watch out or they may swoop down and give you bird flu! It’s just as Alfred Hitchcock predicted!
Throwing Down the Gauntlet:
Gone are the days when men would defend their honor by challenging those who have wronged them to a duel. Well, at least to duels of violence. No longer will you hear about “Pistols at Dawn” but instead you are more likely to see a dance off. Such was the case at a recent college baseball game during a rain delay. Check out the sweet dance moves of the players as they wait out the storm:

When in Doubt, Steal:
30 Rock is one of the best shows currently on television. It’s smart, funny, and just downright entertaining. It’s a shame that we have to post this exposé by blogger Brian Lynch explaining how Tina Fey is really just ripping off the Muppets. Read the full post in all it’s detail: 30 Rock is a Rip-Off of The Muppet Show

Blast from the Past:
Mae Jemison is an astronaut and physician. She has worked with NASA and the Peace Corps and has been named one of the 100 greatest African-Americans. At the TED (Techonology, Entertainment, Design) conference in 2002 she made an enlightening speech about the reconcillation between arts and sciences and how pivotol this reconcilliation is in order for the future to be as productive and evolutionary as we all hope it will be. It’s a really interesting speech, and while it was made in 2002, it remains incredibly relevant. Take a look:

Take a look at this op-ed piece from David Brooks of The New York Times. In it he explains how the Lemon Life is more and more frequently becoming an integral part of everyone’s development, along with childhood and adolescence. While he refers to this period as “the Odyssey”, the message remains the same: Everyone goes through this phase. Read the full article: The Odyssey Years
High Five:
No gesture can communicate such emotion as the High Five. It has become our generation’s version of the pat on the back and receiving one from a colleague, a boss, or someone you respect can be a great thing. On the flip side, nothing can be more humiliating that going up for a celebratory hand slap, missing, and then looking a little foolish. In an effort to help avoid this awkward situation, here’s a video illustrating the key to the perfect High Five:
Listen Up:
It’s easy to dismiss our various creative endeavors on the grounds that we don’t have the proper equipment…a nice camera, an electric guitar, the latest Adobe software…But The Black Cab Sessions provide evidence that all you ever need is what you’ve got to work with. This installment features the always lovely Lykke Li.

One of the defining characteristics of our generation is a sense of entrepreneurship and the desire to be our own bosses. One of the biggest challenges however is knowing where, or how, to start.
