The Best Laid Plans

My vision for my life had always been a maelstrom of sorts. Numerous possibilities blindly scurrying about, cascading into one another in an endless stream of victories and defeats, each more eager than the last to topple the reigning career of that week. Their rule, however short lived, always accompanied a soothing solace that allowed for days, weeks, and even years to pass in which I truly believed I had finally found my way.
That is until the next exciting career prospect came along to overthrow my best-laid plans. And as law replaced medicine, and psychology replaced law (and on and on it went), I grew more desperate, confused and utterly lost. You see, although I left each vision behind knowing that I had made the right decision, I couldn’t help but panic as I looked around at all my seemingly well adjusted friends. While they had managed to graduate and began working towards the career of their choice, I was still lost in a haze and struggling to finish my undergraduate degree.
Fast-forward to today, with a little hindsight on my side, I can honestly say that there is not one thing I would change about that period in my life. The older, and hopefully wiser me, would love to tell my former self that everything worked out just fine. I managed to create a wonderful vision for my life, because of, rather than despite, my inability to suck it up and go to law school/medical school/grad school.
So for those who find themselves in the same position as I was, please don’t hesitate to reassess your plans. At the very least find out whether your heart truly is the driving force working as the visionary behind the action. Nothing in this world, least of all our hopes and dreams, remain static for very long. They may appear to be so, if only because the change is too slow for the eye to see, but I truly believe that a good measure of whether someone has grown, matured, aged into a more learned, educated, experienced individual, is that the plans for their lives have evolved along with them. Anyone who attempts to fight against this evolutionary reality is, in my opinion, doomed to fail.
